Top 5 Interview Questions — Accountant

1Walk me through the month-end close process you managed in your last role.
Be specific about the timeline, the journals you processed, reconciliations you owned, and how you ensured accuracy under deadline pressure. Generic answers won't cut it here.
2How do you handle a situation where the numbers don't reconcile and time is short?
Show methodical problem-solving. Talk through how you isolate the discrepancy, who you escalate to, and how you document your findings. Interviewers want composure and process.
3What accounting software have you used and how deeply have you worked in it?
Name the platforms — Xero, Sage, QuickBooks, SAP, Oracle. Go beyond "I've used it" and describe what you actually did: reconciliations, management reports, payroll runs, or integrations.
4Tell me about a time you identified a financial error or risk that saved the business money.
This is your chance to show real value. Give the specific finding, the potential impact, and what you recommended. Even a small example with clear numbers is better than a vague one.
5How do you stay current with changes in tax legislation or accounting standards?
Mention HMRC updates, ICAEW or ACCA newsletters, CPD requirements, and any recent change you've had to implement in practice. Show you treat staying current as part of the job.
