The US resume in 2026 is a short, dense, keyword aware document. One page for roughly every ten years of experience, reverse chronological, no photo, no date of birth, no marital status, and no references section. Employers avoid personal details because federal law bans hiring decisions based on age, race, sex, and appearance, so a resume that includes them creates risk instead of rapport. The document is called a resume, not a CV; in America a CV is the long academic version, and sending one to a normal job reads as not knowing the market.

Behind almost every application sits an ATS, the tracking software that stores and filters resumes before a person reads them. 97.8% of Fortune 500 companies used a detectable ATS in 2025, per Jobscan. That is why keywords from the job posting matter and why format discipline pays: clean headings, standard fonts, real text rather than graphics. FreeCV bakes those rules into every template and includes a free checker that scores your resume against any posting you paste in.

The page size is its own trap for international applicants. America prints on US Letter, 8.5 by 11 inches, while nearly everyone else uses A4. FreeCV lets you switch page size in the design panel, so the same resume downloads as Letter for a New York application and A4 for anywhere else. Building and downloading are free, with no signup and no watermark, rated 4.4 out of 5 by 1319 users across 78,188 documents built.

The US Format, Rule by Rule

📄

One Page, Earn the Second

One page per decade of experience is the working rule. Recruiters skim in seconds and a tight page beats a padded two every time.

🚫

No Photo, No Personal Data

No photo, birthdate, nationality, or marital status. Anti discrimination law makes employers avoid them, and many recruiters discard resumes that include them.

🔁

Reverse Chronological

Most recent role first, always. Both recruiters and ATS software expect it, and formats that obscure dates read as hiding something.

🔢

Numbers in Every Bullet

American resume culture rewards quantification. Team size, budget, percentage, timeframe. A bullet without a number is a claim; with one it is evidence.

🗓️

Month First Dates

May 2024, or 05/2024. Never day first. Writing 12/05/2024 for the 12th of May will be read as December 5th by every American recruiter.

Keywords the ATS Can Find

Mirror the exact terms of the posting for skills, tools, and titles. The FreeCV checker scores your resume against any posting and lists what is missing.

Converting Your CV to a US Resume

Applying to American companies from abroad, or arriving on a visa? Most of the work is deletion. Here is exactly what goes, what stays, and what changes.

Delete these
  • The photo
  • Date of birth and age
  • Nationality and marital status
  • The references section
  • Long personal statements
  • Anything past page two
Keep and sharpen
  • Every job, newest first
  • Education, degree and school
  • Skills the posting names
  • Certifications that transfer
  • Quantified achievements
  • Languages, they count here
Change these
  • Spelling to American English
  • Dates to month first
  • Phone to +1 or country code
  • Page size to US Letter
  • CV in the filename to Resume
  • Titles to US equivalents

One line handles work status when you need it: authorized to work in the US, or your visa status stated plainly. Employers ask early anyway, and honesty up front saves three interviews that go nowhere.

Real Bullets, Before and After

Same facts, rewritten the way American recruiters read. The AI does each one in about 3 seconds.

Accountant converting an overseas CV
BEFORE

Responsible for preparation of monthly financial statements and other accounting duties as assigned.

AFTER AI

Closed monthly books for a $40M distributor in 5 days, prepared GAAP statements, and cut audit prep time by a third by standardizing the reconciliation pack.

What changed: The duty became a result with a dollar figure, a timeline, and GAAP, the keyword a US posting for this role almost always contains.
Software Engineer on OPT
BEFORE

Worked on backend development for the main product using various technologies.

AFTER AI

Built and shipped 9 backend services in Go and PostgreSQL for a product serving 200,000 users, cutting median API response time from 480ms to 90ms.

What changed: Named tools, a user count, and a measured speedup. Various technologies is invisible to an ATS; Go and PostgreSQL are searchable.
Retail Manager, first US application
BEFORE

Managed a store and was in charge of staff and sales targets.

AFTER AI

Ran a 12 person store doing $2.1M a year, beat plan 7 of 8 quarters, and cut staff turnover from 40% to 15% by rebuilding the onboarding schedule.

What changed: Scope, revenue, a streak, and a turnaround number. Four proofs in one line where there used to be a job title restated.

Who This Page Is For

International Students

On F1, applying for OPT or your first American role. The conversion section above is the checklist, and the work status line saves awkward emails later.

Visa Applicants

Targeting US employers who sponsor. A resume in the exact local format signals you will not need hand holding on the basics.

First Job Americans

Never written a resume before? The rules above plus the builder get you from blank page to clean PDF in about ten minutes.

Remote Workers Abroad

Applying to US companies from anywhere. Letter size PDF, American spelling, month first dates, and keywords from the posting.

Returning Expats

Coming back after years on another format. Strip the photo your Berlin CV needed and requantify everything in dollars.

Career Changers

The AI reframes your old field in the vocabulary of the new one and the ATS checker confirms the posting sees the overlap.

5 Mistakes That Sink US Applications

Recruiters see these daily, and each one costs interviews.

01

Sending a CV Instead

Three dense pages with a photo and a personal statement. To a US recruiter it reads as a document from a different market, because it is.

The FixOne or two pages, no photo, no personal block. The conversion checklist above covers the rest.
02

The Photo

Federal anti discrimination rules make employers avoid resumes with photos, and many recruiters set them aside without reading further.

The FixNo photo, full stop. FreeCV templates only show one if you add it, so add nothing.
03

Duties Instead of Results

Responsible for managing social media tells a recruiter what your job description said, not what you did with it.

The FixVerb first, number last. Grew Instagram engagement 3x in 6 months beats any responsible for.
04

Ignoring the ATS

A posting asks for project management and the resume says led projects. To keyword matching software those can be different things.

The FixPaste the posting into the free checker and close the exact keyword gaps it lists.
05

Day First Dates

12/05/2024 means December 5th to every American reader. A harmless habit at home becomes a silent timeline error here.

The FixSpell the month: May 2024 to Present. Nobody has ever misread that.

US Resume Questions, Answered

How long should a US resume be in 2026?+

One page for roughly every ten years of experience. A student or early career applicant should always fit on one page, a mid career professional can justify two, and almost nobody outside academia needs three. American recruiters skim fast and reward density: short bullets, strong verbs, numbers wherever they exist. If your resume runs long, the fix is nearly always cutting old detail rather than shrinking the font.

Do American resumes have photos?+

No, and this is the rule that surprises applicants from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia the most. US employers avoid photos because federal law bans hiring decisions based on race, age, sex, and appearance related traits, so a photo creates risk they do not want. Many recruiters set photo resumes aside entirely. FreeCV templates only show a photo if you choose to add one, so the American default is simply to not add it.

What is the difference between a resume and a CV in the US?+

In America they are different documents. A resume is the short one or two page summary every normal job application wants. A CV is the long academic document listing publications, grants, and teaching history, and it is only used for academic, research, and some medical positions. If a US job ad says resume, send the short version. Sending a six page CV to a marketing role reads as not knowing the market.

Should I put my visa or work authorization on my US resume?+

If you are a citizen or green card holder, you do not need to say anything. If you need sponsorship or are on OPT, CPT, or another status, the honest play is one plain line near your contact details, such as authorized to work in the US, or F1 OPT valid through 2027. Employers ask early anyway, and surprising a recruiter after three interviews wastes everyone including you.

What date format do US resumes use?+

Month and year, written like May 2024 or 05/2024, always in month first order. Writing 12/05/2024 where you mean the 12th of May will be read as December 5th by every American who sees it. Safest is spelling the month out: June 2023 to Present.

Letter or A4, which paper size for a US resume?+

US Letter, which is 8.5 by 11 inches and slightly shorter and wider than A4. Almost every other country uses A4, so PDFs built abroad often print oddly in the US. FreeCV lets you pick the page size in the design panel, so you can download this application in Letter and your next Sydney application in A4 from the same resume.

Do I list references on a US resume?+

No. Skip the references section and skip the references available upon request line too, because recruiters know they can ask. The space is better spent on one more achievement bullet. Have a separate references list ready to send when someone requests it, usually after an interview.

What is an ATS and do US employers really use one?+

An ATS is applicant tracking software, the system that stores and filters applications before a person reads them. In the US it is close to universal at scale: 97.8% of Fortune 500 companies used a detectable ATS in 2025 per Jobscan. That is why keyword matching matters. FreeCV includes a free checker that scores your resume against any job posting and lists the keywords you are missing.

How do I write a US resume from outside the United States?+

Start from your existing CV and subtract. Remove the photo, date of birth, nationality, marital status, and any long personal statement. Cut to one or two pages, lead every bullet with a verb, add numbers, and switch to American spelling. Put your phone in international format with the country code. The conversion section on this page walks through exactly what to delete and what to keep.

Is a summary section required on a US resume?+

Not required, but useful once you have a few years of experience. Two or three lines at the top stating what you are, your strongest proof, and what you are aiming at. Skip the objective statement that describes what you want from the employer; the summary is about what they get from you. Entry level applicants can drop the section entirely and let the education and projects speak.

What font do American recruiters expect?+

A clean standard font at a readable size: Arial, Calibri, Helvetica, Georgia, or similar at 10 to 12 points. Nothing decorative, nothing below 10 points to force a page to fit. FreeCV templates ship with safe font pairings so this is one decision you do not have to make.

Should my US resume be reverse chronological?+

Yes, in almost every case. Most recent job first, working backwards. American recruiters and ATS software both expect it, and the functional format that hides dates tends to read as hiding something. If you have a gap, own it in one line rather than reorganizing the whole document around it.

Does FreeCV cost anything?+

No. Building, the AI assistant, templates, the ATS checker, and the PDF download are free with no signup and no watermark, rated 4.4 out of 5 by 1319 users. A one time $19 PRO upgrade adds premium templates, Word export, and higher AI limits, and it is genuinely optional.

Do I need to sign up to build a resume?+

No. Open the builder and start typing. Your work saves in your browser through local storage, and you can build, edit, and download the PDF without ever entering an email address. An account is optional and only needed if you want your resumes available across devices.

Can I tailor my resume to each job application?+

Yes, and in the US market you should. Paste the job posting into the ATS checker, see which keywords are missing, and let the AI rework the relevant bullets. Ten minutes per application, and tailored resumes match postings far better than one generic version sent everywhere. Keep one master resume and adjust a copy per role.
