What Does a Animator Actually Do?

Animators create movement — character rigs, motion graphics, visual effects, and cutscenes for games, film, TV, advertising, and digital media. They typically report to an animation director or art director and spend most of their week in Maya, Blender, After Effects, or Toon Boom, working from storyboards and briefs. Key Skills to Include

Top 5 Interview Questions — Animator

1Walk me through your animation process from brief to final delivery.
Cover storyboarding, blocking, spline refinement, and review cycles. Show you understand production pipelines, not just software.
2How do you take critical feedback on your animation work without it becoming personal?
This is really about professionalism. Give an example of feedback that improved your work and how you applied it quickly.
3What's your approach to animating realistic human movement vs. stylised character movement?
Discuss reference footage, motion capture, and how you adapt principles of animation — squash and stretch, anticipation — to different styles.
4Tell me about a project where you had to work under a very tight deadline.
Be specific about how many seconds of animation you delivered, in how many days, and what corners you cut strategically without losing quality.
5Which animation software are you most proficient in, and what are its limitations?
Honesty and depth of knowledge win here. Name the tool, explain what you use it for, and acknowledge where you supplement it with other software.

How to Tailor Your CV

Pixar, Rockstar Games, WPP, Framestore, and Nickelodeon are major animation employers. Pixar and Framestore look for a strong reel demonstrating character performance and secondary motion. Rockstar and other game studios want to see real-time animation in Unreal Engine or Unity in your portfolio. Advertising agencies like those in the WPP group prioritise motion graphics and After Effects skills. Always link your showreel directly in your CV header — without it, most applications go nowhere.
