What Does a Train Driver Actually Do?

Train drivers operate passenger or freight trains, following strict timetables and safety protocols across rail networks. The role is almost entirely safety-critical — you're responsible for hundreds of passengers or tons of freight. Most drivers work for national rail operators or metro systems and report to depot managers. A typical week involves a mix of early, late, and night shifts, route learning sign-offs, and mandatory safety briefings.

Top 5 Interview Questions — Train Driver

1How do you manage fatigue and stay alert during long or irregular shifts?
Be honest and specific — sleep hygiene, structured rest before nights, avoiding caffeine dependency. Operators take fatigue management seriously; show you do too.
2Describe a time you had to make a safety-critical decision under pressure.
Walk through the situation clearly — what you saw, what the rule said, what you did. If you have emergency response or incident experience, this is the place to use it.
3What do you know about the rules of the railway and SPAD incidents?
Show you understand Signal Passed At Danger procedures and the Human Factors framework. If you've completed any formal Rule Book or RSSB training, name the specific modules.
4How do you approach route learning on a new line?
Talk about structured methods — cab rides, footplate observation, line diagrams, and the formal sign-off process. Emphasise that you would never operate a route you weren't fully signed for.
5Why do you want to be a train driver specifically with this operator?
Do your homework — reference the operator's fleet (Class 387, TfL S-Stock, etc.), their network, or any recent investments. Generic answers get filtered out at this stage.

How to Tailor Your CV

National rail operators like Network Rail partners (Avanti, LNER, GTR) and Transport for London in the UK, Deutsche Bahn in Germany, and Amtrak in the US are the main employers. Each has its own training pathway, but all look for a clean driving record, strong psychometric test results, and evidence of safety awareness. Metro and light rail operators like Dubai Metro (Keolis) want candidates who can demonstrate composure and procedural discipline. Highlight any existing PTS (Personal Track Safety) certification or previous safety-critical work experience prominently.
