Paragraph by paragraph
I am applying to be a Lead Child Protection Practitioner in Islington's multi agency child protection team. I have been a social worker in children's services since 2019, first in Kent's referral and assessment team and since April 2022 as a senior social worker in Hackney, where I hold a caseload of 18 children on child protection and child in need plans.
Her caseload, before anything else
She uses the role's exact title, then sums up her career and current caseload in one sentence. A shortlister can see her level before reading any further.
Most of my week is section 47 work. I lead enquiries, chair strategy meetings and contribute to child protection conferences, and I still complete my assessments within timescale. In Kent I completed more than 200 assessments, and 95% of them were finished within the 45 working day limit.
Section 47 work and timescales
The paragraph covers what a child protection lead does most: enquiries, strategy meetings and conferences. The Kent figure gives a measurable result without describing a single case.
What draws me to the new team is having police, health and education colleagues working alongside us every day. Many of the delays I see in section 47 work come from waiting for information, and strategy meetings go better when everyone round the table already knows the family's history.
Why this team
She explains what she expects the new way of working to fix, using her own experience. It reads as someone who has thought about this job in particular.
I write court reports and give evidence in family proceedings, and I mentor three newly qualified social workers through their ASYE. I try to give them the supervision I found most useful in my own first year, with time to talk a case through before a visit as well as after it.
Court work and supervision
Court work matters for a lead practitioner, so it comes first. The supervision line gives one concrete habit, and that tells a manager more about her as a mentor.
I am registered with Social Work England and my CPD is up to date. I speak conversational Twi, which has helped with a few families in Hackney. I can talk through how I would make joint visits work in the first few months, if that would be useful.
Registration and a practical offer
Social Work England is the right regulator for England, and it is worth checking your CV says the same, because older CVs often still say HCPC. The offer at the end is about the work itself, which suits a role that is new to most councils.
The registration line for each UK nation
Social workers are regulated separately in each part of the UK. Use the right name, because an outdated one suggests your paperwork is out of date too.
| Where you work | Regulator |
|---|---|
| England | Social Work England, since 2 December 2019. The HCPC no longer registers social workers in England. |
| Scotland | Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) |
| Wales | Social Care Wales |
| Northern Ireland | Northern Ireland Social Care Council (NISCC) |
In England, Social Work England asks you to record at least two pieces of CPD in each registration year, which runs from 1 December to 30 November, and at least one of them must include a reflection with a peer. A line saying your CPD is up to date is enough for the letter.
If the council asks for a short statement first
Some councils ask for a few lines before the full supporting statement, and agencies want the same essentials. This keeps the caseload, the section 47 work, the timescales and the registration.
Writing about casework without breaching confidentiality
Your letter has to show judgment using real work without pointing to any family. Numbers and types of work let you do that.
- Use counts and plan types: caseload size, child protection or child in need plans, assessments completed and how many were in timescale.
- Describe the work itself: "I lead section 47 enquiries and chair strategy meetings" shows your level without telling anyone's story.
- Leave out combinations that identify: a child's age, a borough and an unusual circumstance together can be enough for someone to recognise a family.
- Use current terms: initial and core assessments were replaced by a single assessment in 2013. Councils now call it a child and family assessment or a single assessment.
Other social work posts, other openings
Newly qualified, starting your ASYE
Name your degree and placements, and say what kind of team you want to start in.
I qualified from the University of Kent in July, and my final placement was in a children in need team in Medway, where I worked alongside an experienced social worker with six families.
Adult social care
Give your Care Act assessments, the setting and how quickly you complete them.
For three years I have carried out Care Act assessments in a hospital discharge team, most of them within a few days of the referral.
Agency to permanent
Explain why you want to stay in one place, and show the range of councils you have worked for.
I have worked as an agency social worker in three London boroughs since 2021, and I want to settle in one team and see families through from referral to closure.
Children in care
Show the plans you write and how you keep children involved in decisions.
I have been the social worker for 14 children in care for two years, and I write and review their care plans with them before each review meeting.
Practice supervisor or team manager
Talk about the team, how you supervise and one result across the team.
As a practice supervisor I support four social workers, and our team’s assessments have been within timescale every month this year.
Working Together 2026 and Families First
Children's social care in England is going through big changes, and it helps to show you know what they are.
- Working Together to Safeguard Children 2026 was published in March 2026. It keeps the 45 working day maximum for an assessment, and describes Family Help as targeted early help combined with section 17 support.
- Families First Partnership: councils are setting up multi agency child protection teams, and many are recruiting lead child protection practitioners. Adverts ask for an experienced, registered social worker with child protection and court experience, but the details are set locally, so read the person specification closely.
- Early career support: the ASYE still applies, and the Department for Education says a new early career programme will replace it from September 2027, with new early career standards in use from 1 April 2027. If you supervise newly qualified staff, say so.
Five mistakes in social work applications
The old regulator
HCPC registration on a 2026 letter for a job in England tells the reader something is out of date.
Write registered with Social Work England.
Case stories
Even without names, details of one family can identify them, and managers notice.
Describe the type of work and the numbers.
Values with no practice
"Passionate about safeguarding" tells a manager nothing about how you work.
Give one habit or decision that shows your values.
Leaving out court work
For child protection and lead roles, court experience is often essential.
Say what you write and whether you have given evidence.
Ignoring the person specification
Councils shortlist against the essential criteria, often line by line.
Cover each essential criterion in your supporting statement.
Letter, supporting statement and length
- Length: one page for the letter. Amara's is about 265 words.
- Supporting statement: most councils also ask for one on the application form. Use the same evidence there, set out against the person specification.
- Addressee: the team or service manager named in the advert for informal discussion.
- Tone: plain and reflective, the way you would write an assessment.
The main points from this page
- 1Use the right regulator for the nation you work in.
- 2Show judgment through numbers and types of work, never through a case.
- 3Mention section 47 work, timescales and court experience for child protection posts.
- 4Know what Working Together 2026 and Families First change for the role.
- 5Say how you supervise, if the role involves it.
Frequently asked questions
What should a social worker cover letter include?
The post and council, your registration, your current role and caseload, the statutory work you do, a result with numbers, any court work and supervision, and why you want this team.
Are social workers in England still registered with the HCPC?
No. Social Work England has regulated social workers in England since 2 December 2019.
Can I describe a case in my cover letter?
Only in general terms. Use numbers and types of work, and leave out anything that could identify a family.
What is a lead child protection practitioner?
