What Does a Midwife Actually Do?

Midwives provide care to women throughout pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postnatal period — up to 28 days after delivery. On a labour ward shift, you might manage two or three women in active labour, conduct deliveries, respond to obstetric emergencies, and support partners and families through one of the most intense experiences of their lives. You'll also work in antenatal clinics, community settings visiting new mothers at home, and neonatal units. Most midwives work for an NHS Trust or a hospital system, reporting to a senior midwife or consultant obstetrician for complex cases. The physical and emotional demands are among the highest in healthcare.

Walk through the HAEMOSTASIS or local protocol steps: calling for help, IV access, oxytocin, fundal massage, catheterisation, monitoring, fluid balance, and documentation. Clear, structured clinical answers show that you'd stay composed in a real emergency.
4How do you maintain your wellbeing when you experience difficult outcomes, including stillbirth or neonatal loss?
Be honest and describe real strategies — debrief with colleagues, formal supervision, clinical psychology referral, the specific support available in your trust. Emotional resilience here is professional, not personal weakness.
5How do you support a woman in active labour who wants a physiological birth but is showing signs of slow progress?
Show knowledge of active birth positions, mobilisation, hydrotherapy where available, the difference between slow progress and pathological labour, and how you'd communicate risk clearly without undermining her autonomy.

How to Tailor Your CV

NHS Trusts need your NMC registration pin prominently displayed, your BSc or postgraduate Midwifery qualification, and any additional qualifications like Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO), neonatal resuscitation, or specialist antenatal screening training. Private maternity units (Portland Hospital, BMI Healthcare) value experience in continuity of care models, water birth, and supporting high-expectation clients in a private setting. International hospitals in UAE, Qatar, and Australia need equivalent registration in the country of application (HAAD, AHPRA) and will ask about UK NMC registration status. Newly qualified midwives should include their clinical placement hours broken down by setting (labour ward, community, antenatal) as this provides important context for hiring managers.
