What Does a Speech & Language Therapist Actually Do?

Top 5 Interview Questions — Speech & Language Therapist

1How do you approach an initial assessment for a child referred with suspected autism and limited verbal communication?
Walk through a structured approach — informal observation, standardised tools like PLS-5 or ADOS, parent interview, and next steps. Show clinical reasoning, not just process.
2Describe your experience with dysphagia assessment and management.
Name tools like the MASA or FEES referral pathway. Be specific about settings — acute hospital, community, care home — and patient populations you've worked with.

It should be jargon-free, evidence-based, child-centred, and clearly link needs to provision. Employers want SLTs who understand education as well as health.

NHS roles require HCPC registration and RCSLT membership — list both. Mencap and Affinity Trust work predominantly with adults with learning disabilities and autism, so AAC experience and PECS training are highly relevant. Private paediatric clinics often expect broader caseload experience and the ability to see clients outside standard hours.
