An Indian resume in 2026 is one page for a fresher and usually two for someone with experience. It opens with a short profile, keeps education high while you are early in your career, and gives projects and internships the space a first job would take. Private employers do not need your date of birth, your father’s name, a photo or a declaration at the bottom. Government forms often do, and they collect them in their own fields.

The sections below use numbers from 936 resumes made on FreeCV by people in India this autumn, and cover the rules that change between a campus drive, a Naukri application, a government form and a job abroad.

In India the builder, the free templates, the AI assistant with 25 uses a day and the PDF download are all free, with no signup and no watermark. 143,608 resumes and CVs have been built on FreeCV, rated 4.4 out of 5 by 1319 users.

Biodata, Resume or CV? Three Documents, Three Uses

The three words get mixed up all the time in India. Employers do not mix them up.

Private companies, startups, MNCs, campus placements

Resume

One or two pages on what you can do for this job: profile, experience or projects, education, skills. This is what Naukri, LinkedIn and almost every private employer expect.

Academia, research, medicine, jobs abroad

CV

The longer, complete record: every degree, publication, conference and fellowship. Also the word employers in the UK, Europe and the Gulf use for what India calls a resume.

Matrimony, not jobs

Biodata

Personal facts first: date of birth, height, religion, family. It has no place in a private sector application. Where an employer needs personal particulars, it gives you a form.

What 936 Indian Resumes Built on FreeCV Look Like

We took the latest resume from each of 936 people who downloaded one from an Indian connection between 2 September and 21 October 2026, removed our own test accounts and counted pages, fields and sections. We did not read or quote anyone’s wording.

Median number of skills listed: between 10 and 11. In the UK it is 8.

Two pages is the norm, three is common

Over half run to two pages and 15% to three or more. A fresher rarely needs more than one, and a third page usually means college projects described at full length.

Personal details are still everywhere

One in five shows a date of birth and about one in seven a marital status, far more than on UK resumes built here. A private employer needs neither.

The skills list runs long

One in three lists 15 skills or more. A list that long reads like a syllabus, and the two skills the job needs get lost in it.

Freshers lean on projects

17% have no work experience yet, and 23% include a projects section. For a fresher, projects are the experience section, so they deserve the most space.

Country comes from the connection used to download, so a few people will have been travelling, and some people in India on a VPN will be missing.

The Fresher Resume, Top to Bottom

Campus drives and entry level roles are screened fast. One page, in this order, puts what a recruiter screens for where they look first.

1

Header

Name, city, phone, a professional email, and your LinkedIn or GitHub. No photo, no date of birth, no father’s name.

2

Profile

Two lines: your degree, your strongest skill and the role you want. Skip the objective about a challenging position in a reputed organisation.

3

Education

Degree, college, university, years and CGPA with its scale, such as 8.4/10. Then Class 12 and Class 10 with board, year and percentage.

4

Projects

Two or three, each with what you built, the tools you used, and one result someone could check: users, accuracy, time saved, a GitHub link.

5

Internships and training

Company, dates and what you did. A final year project done with a company belongs here too.

6

Skills

Grouped into languages, frameworks and tools, and only what you could be tested on in an interview.

7

Certifications and achievements

NPTEL, Coursera, hackathons, coding contest ranks, sport, and positions of responsibility, one line each.

A project line that gets read

“Built a library management system in Java and MySQL for our college library. It handles issue and return for about 1,200 students and replaced the paper register. Code on GitHub.”

Placement cell format

Many training and placement cells send every resume to recruiters in one standard format. Follow theirs for campus drives, and use your own resume for off campus applications.

CTC and Notice Period: What Goes on the Page

Indian recruiters ask three numbers on the first call. Only one of them belongs on your resume.

Leave it off

Current CTC

It anchors the salary talk before you have had an interview, and the recruiter will ask on the first call anyway. Keep it in your Naukri profile and application forms, where there is a field for it.

Leave it off

Expected CTC

Look up the range for the role first, then answer on the call or in the form. A number printed on your resume is a number you cannot move.

Add it if it is short

Notice period

Immediate joiner or 30 days is a real advantage, and many recruiters filter on it. A long notice period is better explained on the call, with whether a buyout is possible.

Photo, Date of Birth, Father’s Name, Declaration: Who Still Asks

The old biodata habits depend on who you are applying to. For most private jobs, the answer to all four is no.

On FreeCV, one in five Indian resumes carries a date of birth and fewer than one in twenty ends with a declaration. When a form does ask for a declaration, the usual line is: I hereby declare that the information given above is true to the best of my knowledge and belief.

Percentages, CGPA and Board Marks, Written Right

Of the grades written on Indian resumes here, 58% are percentages and 24% are CGPA. Either works, as long as the reader never has to guess the scale.

LevelWrite it like thisNot like this
DegreeB.Tech, Computer Science, Anna University, 2022 to 2026, CGPA 8.4/10CGPA 8.4, with no scale

Converting CGPA

If a form wants a percentage, use the conversion your university or board publishes. CBSE, for example, gave 9.5 as its multiplier for Class 10 CGPA.

Class 10 and 12

Keep them while you are a fresher, because many campus drives set cut offs on them. After three to five years of work, one line each, or drop them.

No converted GPA

Never convert your marks to a US GPA yourself. Employers abroad that need a conversion ask for a credential evaluation.

Twelve Skills, Grouped, Beat Twenty in a Line

One in three Indian resumes here lists 15 skills or more. The fix is not fewer skills you have, it is fewer skills you list.

Skills, readable in five seconds
Languages: Python, SQL, Java
Frameworks: Django, React
Tools: Git, Docker, Power BI, Excel
Spoken: English, Hindi, Tamil
  • Twelve items in four groups, each one you could be tested on in an interview.
  • Use the job description’s spelling: Power BI, not PowerBI. Applicant tracking systems match words.
  • Soft skills like teamwork and communication go in your bullets, where they come with proof.
  • MS Office is assumed for most desk jobs. List Excel only if you can do more than a sum.

New Rules and New Numbers for Job Seekers in India

What moved in the last year, and what it means for your resume.

21 November 2025

India’s four Labour Codes came into force. Under them every employee is entitled to a letter of appointment, and fixed term employees qualify for gratuity after one year instead of five. Get the appointment letter from a new employer before you resign from the old one.

September 2026

Naukri’s JobSpeak index of white collar hiring stood at 3,053, 2% above September 2025, as reported in early October. AI and machine learning jobs grew 20%, hiring at global capability centres and in BPO 4% each, while IT and software services fell 4%. Hiring for people with up to three years of experience rose 1%.

For your resume

AI and data roles are where postings grew. If you have done real work with them, a project, an internship task, a course you could talk through, name it plainly in your skills and projects. If you have not, leave it off, because the interview will find out.

Applying Abroad From India

Take off the photo, date of birth, father’s name, marital status and declaration first. Then change what each country expects.

United Kingdom

Call it a CV. One or two pages, British spelling, a line on your right to work, references available on request.

The UK CV format →

United States

Call it a resume. One page per ten years of experience, US Letter paper, numbers in every bullet.

The US resume format →

Australia

Two to three pages, two referees at the end, Australian spelling, A4.

The Australian resume →

Canada

Two pages, no personal details. In Ontario, public job postings from employers with 25 or more staff must say if AI screens applicants, and cannot demand Canadian experience.

Ontario’s posting rules →

Gulf countries

A photo, nationality and visa status are common on Gulf CVs. Keep the rest of the format clean and short.

Open the builder →

Keep your grades exactly as awarded. For Canada and the US, a credential evaluation such as WES helps employers read an Indian degree. For the UK, UK ENIC does the same job.

Questions Indian Job Seekers Ask Us

What is the best resume format for freshers in India in 2026?+

One page, in this order: a two line profile, education with your CGPA and its scale, two or three projects, internships, grouped skills, then certifications and achievements. Put education high while you have little work experience, and give projects the space a job would take. If your placement cell gives you a fixed format, use theirs for campus drives.

How long should a resume be in India?+

One page for a fresher and two for most people with experience. Of the 936 Indian resumes we measured on FreeCV, 31% were one page, 54% were two and 15% ran to three or more. Three pages makes sense only for a long senior career or an academic CV with publications.

Should I put a photo on my resume in India?+

Not for private companies, startups or MNCs. Recruiters do not need it, and a photo takes space your projects could use. Government and PSU applications ask you to upload a photo inside the form, so add it there. Gulf employers are the main case where a photo on the CV itself is common.

Should I mention my date of birth, father’s name or marital status?+

Not for a private sector job. None of them affect whether you can do the work, and they take space from things that do. Government and exam forms collect these details in their own fields, so give them there. One in five Indian resumes built on FreeCV still showed a date of birth.

Should I add a declaration at the end of my resume?+

Not on a resume for a private company. Government forms carry their own declaration that you sign, and some schools, colleges and smaller local employers still expect one. Under 5% of the Indian resumes we measured ended with a declaration, so leaving it off is already the norm.

What is the difference between a resume, a CV and a biodata?+

A resume is one or two pages on what you can do for this job, and it is what private employers and Naukri expect. A CV is the longer, complete record used in academia, research and medicine, and it is also the word employers in the UK, Europe and the Gulf use for a resume. A biodata leads with personal facts like date of birth and family details and belongs to matrimony, not job applications.

Should I mention my current CTC on my resume?+

No. Your current CTC anchors the salary talk before you have had an interview, and the recruiter will ask on the first call anyway. Keep it in your Naukri profile and application forms, where there is a field for it. The same goes for expected CTC.

Should I mention my notice period?+

Yes, if it is short. Immediate joiner or a 30 day notice period is a real advantage, and one line near the top helps because many recruiters filter on it. A long notice period is better explained on the call, along with whether your employer allows a buyout.

How do I write CGPA on a resume?+

Always give the scale, as in CGPA 8.4/10, so nobody has to guess whether it is out of 10 or 4. If a form asks for a percentage, use the conversion your university or board publishes. CBSE, for example, gave 9.5 as its multiplier for Class 10 CGPA. Do not convert your marks to a US GPA yourself.

Should I include Class 10 and 12 marks?+

Yes while you are a fresher, because many campus drives and entry level roles set cut offs on them. Give the board, the year and the percentage. After three to five years of work, one line each is plenty, and many people drop them.

How many skills should I list on my resume?+

Ten to twelve, grouped into languages, frameworks and tools, each one something you could be tested on in an interview. One in three Indian resumes on FreeCV lists 15 or more, and a list that long reads like a syllabus. Show soft skills such as teamwork in your project and job bullets, where they come with proof.

Should I write a career objective or a summary?+

A short summary, also called a profile. Two lines on your degree or experience, your strongest skill and the role you want work better than a general objective about a challenging position in a reputed organisation, which tells a recruiter nothing.

What should I change on my resume to apply for jobs abroad?+

Take off the photo, date of birth, father’s name, marital status and declaration, and keep your grades exactly as awarded. Then follow the country: two pages and a right to work line for the UK, one page per ten years of experience for the US, two to three pages with referees for Australia. For Canada and the US, a credential evaluation such as WES helps employers read an Indian degree.

Is FreeCV free in India?+

Yes. In India the builder, the free templates, the AI assistant with 25 uses a day and the PDF download are all free, with no signup and no watermark. An optional PRO plan, from $19 a month, adds the premium templates and Word export.

Does a FreeCV resume work on Naukri and LinkedIn?+

Yes. Both accept a PDF upload, and FreeCV PDFs carry real text that applicant tracking systems can read, rather than an image of text. Paste the job description into the FreeCV ATS checker before you apply to see which key words from it your resume is missing.
