The UK CV Format,
Built Free in 2026

One or two pages, no photo, no date of birth, a short profile at the top and your right to work stated in one line. That is the CV UK employers expect in 2026. Build it here in British English, check it against the job advert and download it as an A4 PDF.

words in the typical UK profile

A UK CV is a short document, usually one or two pages, that lists your experience with the most recent job first. It opens with a few lines about you and leaves out personal details that have nothing to do with the job. The National Careers Service puts it plainly: “You should not include your age, your date of birth, whether you’re married or your nationality.” (National Careers Service)

The rest depends on where you apply. Private employers and agencies read CVs. Most NHS trusts want their own application form instead. Civil Service jobs are scored against Success Profiles and sometimes ask for a CV with your name taken off. The sections below cover each route, with numbers from 626 CVs built on FreeCV by people in the UK this autumn.

Building here is free and needs no account: the editor, the free templates and the AI assistant, with 25 AI uses a day. From the UK your first two PDF downloads are free as well. 143,608 CVs and resumes have been built on FreeCV, rated 4.4 out of 5 by 1319 users.

What a UK Recruiter Notices in Three Seconds

None of these sinks a strong application on its own. Together they tell the reader your CV was written for somewhere else.

A photo in the header

Normal in parts of Europe and Asia, unusual here. Many UK employers would rather not see one, because it invites questions about age and background.

Instead: Leave it off. FreeCV only shows a photo if you add one.

Date of birth or marital status

The Equality Act 2010 protects age, marriage and civil partnership, race and more, so most employers prefer not to see any of them.

Instead: Name, town, mobile, email and a LinkedIn link if you have one.

Resume, Letter paper, American spelling

A file called resume.pdf, printed on US Letter, that says organized and program. Small things, and each one says the CV was not written for here.

Instead: CV, A4, organised, programme.

Dates nobody can read

05/12/2025 is 5 December to a UK reader and 12 May to an American one. Recruiters skim dates to check for gaps, so they need to be instant.

Instead: Months as words: May 2025 to March 2026.

Referees and their phone numbers

Full referee details take space, and you lose control of who gets called and when.

Instead: References available on request, unless the advert asks for names.

A full street address

Your house number tells a stranger where you live and adds nothing an employer needs to shortlist you.

Instead: Town and postcode area, such as Leicester LE4.

Median number of skills listed: 8. One in six UK CVs lists 15 or more.

Length is mostly right

Nine in ten fit on one or two pages, which is where UK recruiters expect them. The one in nine that runs to three pages or more is usually carrying old jobs in full detail.

Personal details are the easy fix

One in ten shows a date of birth, and about one in fourteen a nationality. The National Careers Service lists both among the things to leave off, and removing them takes seconds.

The skills list runs long

The typical UK CV lists 8 skills, and one in six lists 15 or more. A long list gets skimmed. Keep the skills the advert asks for, in its words, and cut the rest.

LinkedIn is underused

Only one in ten links a LinkedIn profile. If yours is current, the link costs one line and shows more than two pages can hold.

Country comes from the connection used to download, so a few people will have been visiting, and some UK residents on a VPN will be missing.

Profile, Personal Statement or Supporting Information?

UK applications use three names for writing about yourself, and they are three different jobs.

Top of your CV

Profile

Three to five lines on who you are, what you do best and what you want next. The National Careers Service describes it as a few short lines that sum up who you are and what you hope to do.

Civil Service and some private sector forms

Personal statement

A separate box with a word limit set in the advert. Cover the points the advert lists, in the same order, with a real example for each.

NHS application forms

Supporting information

The box that decides an NHS shortlist. Work through the person specification one essential criterion at a time and show how you meet each.

A UK profile that does its job: warehouse team leader, East Midlands

“Warehouse team leader with six years in chilled food distribution, running night shifts of up to 18 pickers. Cut mispicks on my shift by a third in 2025 by reorganising the pick faces with the site manager. Counterbalance and reach truck licences, full UK driving licence, available for nights and weekends.”

Why it works: about 50 words, no “I am”, one real result with a number, and the licences and hours a shift manager screens for in the last line. The FreeCV assistant drafts a profile like this from your own notes and will not add results you did not give it.

Applying to the NHS or the Civil Service

Two of the biggest employers in the country, and neither reads a CV the way a private company does.

NHS Jobs
  • Most trusts want their application form, not a CV, and some say outright that a CV will not be accepted. The employment history section does the job a CV would, so fill it in completely and explain any gaps.
  • Supporting information decides the shortlist. Take each essential criterion from the person specification, use its words as a heading, and give one real example under it.
  • Desirable criteria come second. Cover them after every essential criterion is done.
  • Word limits vary by trust and role. The form tells you yours, so write to it rather than past it.
Build your CV first anyway. With your dates, roles and duties already written, the form becomes copying rather than remembering.
Civil Service Jobs
  • Roles are assessed with Success Profiles, which can test five things: behaviours, strengths, ability, experience and technical skills. The advert lists the ones this role uses.
  • You may be asked for a CV, a personal statement, or both. Write each behaviour example in STAR order: situation, task, action, result.
  • Some adverts ask for an anonymised CV. The Civil Service says it leaves out information that could identify you, such as your name, age or gender.
  • Home Office guidance also lists contact details, nationality and immigration status, and warns against putting your name in the file name.
Keep two files: your normal CV and an anonymised copy. Download the normal one first, then take out your name, contact details and anything that gives away your age, and download again under a neutral file name.

Your Right to Work, in One Line

Every UK employer has to check you can work here before you start. If anything on your CV makes a recruiter wonder, such as a degree from abroad, a last job in another country or a student visa, answer it under your name.

Right to work: British citizen

Worth adding when your education or recent jobs were outside the UK.

Right to work: settled status (EU Settlement Scheme)

For EU, EEA and Swiss citizens with status under the scheme.

Right to work: Graduate visa until August 2028

Give the end date. It is the first thing an employer will ask.

Will need Skilled Worker sponsorship

Honest beats hopeful. Employers that sponsor usually say so in the advert.

The facts, from GOV.UK
  • Graduate visa: two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, 18 months if you apply from 1 January 2027, three years after a PhD. GOV.UK
  • Skilled Worker visa: the job usually has to pay at least £41,700 a year or the going rate for the work, whichever is higher. GOV.UK
  • Proving it: a share code from your online immigration status, or your documents. A British or Irish passport works even if it has expired, and an employer cannot reject your application because you gave an eligible immigration document instead of a share code. GOV.UK

Degree from outside the UK? Write it exactly as awarded and do not invent a UK class for it. If an employer wants a comparison, UK ENIC issues statements that set out the UK level of an overseas qualification.

The One Page CV for Shift Work

Care, warehouse, retail, hospitality, security, construction and driving jobs often fill within days. Whoever shortlists wants three answers fast: can you do the hours, do you hold the licences, and when can you start.

In the top third of the page

  • Your availability: days, nights, weekends, bank holidays
  • When you can start, and any notice period
  • Where you live and whether you drive
  • A one line profile naming the job you want

Licences and checks, named exactly

  • Full UK driving licence, with categories such as C+E for HGV work
  • CSCS card for construction sites, SIA licence for security work
  • Forklift licence, with the truck type: counterbalance, reach
  • Food Hygiene Level 2 for kitchens and food handling
  • DBS check for care and education, and whether you are on the DBS Update Service

In our UK numbers, 44% of CVs already fit on one page. For shift work that is the right length. For most office and professional jobs, two pages give your experience the room it needs.

What Changed for UK Job Seekers in 2026

Dates checked against GOV.UK on 21 October 2026.

6 April 2026

Paternity leave and unpaid parental leave became day one rights, and Statutory Sick Pay now starts from the first day off sick. Starting a new job no longer means waiting to qualify for them.

14 July 2026

The government opened a consultation on making every employer publish pay information in job adverts, or give it in writing before the interview when there is no advert. It closes at 5pm on 27 October 2026, and nothing changes until regulations follow. See where pay in the advert is already the law.

1 January 2027

Graduate visas applied for from this date last 18 months instead of two years. Apply on or before 31 December 2026 to get the full two.

1 January 2027

Protection from unfair dismissal starts after six months in a job instead of two years, which takes some of the risk out of moving.

Graduate market

Indeed reported graduate postings about 7% below a year earlier in July 2026, the lowest level since 2020, and the Institute of Student Employers counted 140 applications for every graduate vacancy in its 2025 survey. With piles that size, a CV matched to each advert does more of the work.

Questions UK Job Seekers Ask Us

How long should a CV be in the UK in 2026?+

Two pages suits most people with a few years of experience, and one page is right for a first job, a career change or shift work. Of the 626 UK CVs we measured on FreeCV, 44% were one page and 45% were two. Three pages makes sense only for a long specialist career, such as a senior clinician or engineer, or for an academic CV that lists publications.

Should I put a photo on my CV in the UK?+

No. UK CVs normally have no photo, and many employers would rather not receive one because it invites questions about age, race and appearance that have nothing to do with the job. Acting, modelling and some presenting jobs are the exception, and the advert will say so. FreeCV only shows a photo if you add one.

Do I put my date of birth or age on a UK CV?+

No. The National Careers Service says you should not include your age, your date of birth, whether you are married or your nationality. An employer needs none of them to shortlist you, and age is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010. One in ten UK CVs built on FreeCV still showed a date of birth, so it is worth checking yours.

Is it a CV or a resume in the UK?+

A CV. Job adverts, recruiters and the National Careers Service all say CV, and resume is rarely used. The document is the same short summary that Americans call a resume. The long academic CV, with every publication and conference, is a different document used for university and research jobs.

What is a personal profile and how long should it be?+

It is the short paragraph at the top of a UK CV that says who you are, what you are good at and what you want next. Three to five lines, roughly 50 to 80 words, works well, and the typical UK profile on FreeCV runs 53 words. Write it without the word I: Warehouse team leader with six years in chilled distribution, rather than I am a warehouse team leader.

Do I need to list references on my CV?+

Usually not. The common UK line is References available on request, which 45% of the UK CVs we measured used, and it is what the National Careers Service suggests. Give names and contact details only when the advert asks for them, and ask your referees first. Many employers take up references after making a conditional offer.

How do I show my right to work in the UK on a CV?+

Add one line under your name, such as Right to work: British citizen, Right to work: settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or Right to work: Graduate visa until August 2028. The employer still has to check it before you start, using a share code or your documents, but the line answers the question before a recruiter has to ask it.

Can I send a CV for an NHS job?+

Usually not in place of the form. Most NHS trusts ask you to apply with an application form, and some say plainly that they do not accept CVs. The employment history section does the job of a CV, and the supporting information box decides the shortlist. An up to date CV still makes the form much faster to fill in, because your dates and duties are already written.

What is an anonymised CV for the Civil Service?+

It is a copy of your CV with the details that could identify you taken out. The Civil Service says an anonymised CV leaves out information such as your name, age or gender, and Home Office guidance also lists contact details, nationality and immigration status. Save it as a separate file without your name in the file name.

Should I include GCSE and A level grades?+

Include them early in your career, when they are among your strongest evidence, and whenever an advert asks for English and maths at grade 4 or C. Once you have a degree or several years of work, one line such as 9 GCSEs including English and maths is enough, and A levels fit on a single line with subjects and grades.

How do I write a degree from outside the UK?+

Give the degree, the university, the country and the grade exactly as awarded, for example Bachelor of Commerce, University of Mumbai, India, 72%. Do not convert it to a UK class yourself. If an employer wants a comparison, UK ENIC, the national agency for recognising qualifications, issues statements that set out the UK level of an overseas award.

Do UK job adverts have to show the salary?+

Not yet. No law requires it today, and the government says most employers already publish pay ranges voluntarily. On 14 July 2026 it opened a consultation on requiring every employer to publish pay information in job adverts, or to give it in writing before the interview when there is no advert. The consultation closes at 5pm on 27 October 2026, and any rule would come later in regulations, with an extended period for employers to prepare.

Should I send my CV as a PDF or a Word file?+

PDF, unless the advert or a recruiter asks for Word. A PDF looks the same on every screen and printer, and FreeCV PDFs carry real text that applicant tracking systems can read. Recruitment agencies sometimes want a Word file so they can add their own header, and Word export comes with FreeCV PRO.

Is FreeCV free to use in the UK?+

Building is free and needs no account: the editor, the free templates and the AI assistant, with 25 AI uses a day. From the UK your first two PDF downloads are free as well. After that, downloads come with PRO, from $19 a month, which also opens the premium templates and Word export.

Can the AI write my CV in British English?+

Yes. Ask the assistant for British English and it writes organised, programme and licence rather than the American spellings. It works from the facts you give it, so give it your real numbers and read the result once before you send it.
