A template for game developers who build worlds players love.
Game developers design and build the systems, mechanics, and features that make games work — from physics and AI to UI and networking. They work in game studios, mobile app companies, and increasingly in enterprise and simulation sectors, reporting to a lead developer or technical director. A typical week involves writing C++ or C# in Unreal Engine or Unity, attending design reviews, debugging gameplay issues, and collaborating with artists and designers. At indie studios, developers may wear many hats; at large studios like EA or Ubisoft, roles are highly specialised.
Game Developer with 4 years of experience in AAA and indie studios using Unity and Unreal Engine 5. Shipped 3 titles across PC, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. Specialised in gameplay programming and procedural generation systems.
Game Developer CVs must show your engine proficiency, shipped titles, and the specific systems you have built. Studios want to see your programming specialisation (gameplay, AI, graphics, tools) and your contribution to shipped products.
Unreal Engine 5, Unity, C++, C#, gameplay programming, AI/behaviour trees, procedural generation, performance optimisation, and version control (Perforce, Git).
Not linking to shipped titles or a portfolio. In games, your shipped credits and demo reel are critical. List your IMDB/Mobygames credits and include a portfolio URL with playable prototypes if possible.
One to two pages. Lead with your shipped titles and platform experience. Use a clean, uncluttered template. Include a Shipped Titles section listing game, studio, role, and platforms.
Figures in USD. Ranges reflect mid-level experience (3–7 years). Senior roles and major metro areas typically sit at the top of these bands.
Rockstar Games, Ubisoft, EA, Activision Blizzard, and King all hire game developers at scale. Rockstar and Naughty Dog are renowned for technical depth — they want strong C++ and custom engine experience, not just Unity familiarity. Mobile-focused companies like King and Supercell care about live ops, A/B testing, and performance on low-end hardware. Ubisoft values multiplayer and networking systems experience. Include a GitHub link or portfolio of personal projects on your CV — it often carries more weight than your degree.
